2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe Review

2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe

Slide behind the wheel of a sleek sports coupe and rediscover the joy of driving! BMW’s reputation for refinement and performance shines once again with the all-new BMW 2 Series Coupe.

The Munich, Germany-based vehicle manufacturer unveiled the 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the United Kingdom in 2021. Over half a year after its release, this two-door, entry-level sports car continues to impress with its advanced driving features.

Overview

The 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe offers Aussie drivers the option to choose between two turbocharged models: the 230i sDrive coupe with a 255 hp four-cylinder engine and the M240i xDrive with a 382 hp straight-six engine.

The BMW 2 Series now lacks a manual transmission and convertible ragtop but makes up for it with other, more modern features. Its sumptuous interior and polished profile make it satisfying to drive. Overall, the 2 Series Coupe stays true to the BMW brand, exceeding expectations in several areas.

New Features

Performance upgrades like stronger brakes, bigger wheels, stickier tires, and firmer suspension combine to make the 2 Series a more exciting car than ever.

The 2022 BMW 2 Series 230i possesses a solid four-cylinder engine. Although not as fast as the AWD M240i, which boasts a powerful straight-six engine, the 230i will still thrill any driver who gets behind the wheel. Adding the M Sport package with Dynamic Handling only enhances the driving experience.

Transmission, Engine, and Performance

BMW offers the 230i with rear-wheel drive and the AWD M240i. However, BMW eventually plans to make both drivetrains available for each variant. An eight-speed automatic transmission represents the only option for either variant.

The 2022 BMW 2 Series 230i coupe comes with a 2-litre, four-cylinder, 190-kW turbocharged engine. On the other hand, the M240i possesses the more powerful 284-kW turbocharged 3-litre straight-six engine.

The M240i offers more performance-enhancing features than the 230i.

At Westside Auto Wholesale, we recommend the M Sport with Dynamic Handling package if you want to bring out the best that the 230i has to offer. It includes upgraded brakes, sportier suspension, 19-inch wheel performance tires, electronic rear differential controls, and a variable-ratio steering system.

If you choose the M240i, most of the add-ons listed above are standard features. The M240i surprised us with its performance and capability to accelerate from zero to 96 km/h in 3.6 seconds. However, the M240i could use some improved steering feedback.

Fuel Efficiency

The 2022 BMW 2 Series 230i Coupe offers fuel efficiency of nine litres per 100 km in the city and seven litres per 100 km on the highway. With a combined fuel efficiency rating of eight litres per 100 km, the 230i delivers below-average fuel efficiency compared to other cars in its class.

The 2022 BMW 2 Series M240i Coupe’s fuel efficiency rating stands at 10.4 litres per 100 km in the city and 7.5 litres per 100 km on the highway. Its combined fuel efficiency rating of 9.1 litres per 100 km also proves below average.

Interior

BMW does not stray too far from previous interior designs in both the 230i and the M240i. However, BMW’s attention to detail regarding ergonomics and build quality of the 2 Series speaks to BMW’s commitment to intuitive layouts and modern styling.

The 2 Series features standard analogue gauges, a heads-up display, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel.

The car proves comfortable enough, although the front seats need more padding. The 2 Series also received an overall increase in width and length. Considering the additional two inches to the wheelbase, you might expect it to offer more space. However, it provides less legroom and headroom than the original model released years ago.

Connectivity and Infotainment

The 2022 BMW 2 Series includes an infotainment system that runs through a 10.3-inch touchscreen or the standard 8.8-inch unit. You can manipulate a rotary controller located on top of the central console, give voice commands, or utilise the controls on the steering wheel to interact with the infotainment system.

Pump it up on the 10-speaker stereo sound system by twisting a physical volume knob. BMW offers subscription-based Wi-Fi facilities for both 2 Series variants. If you consider yourself an audiophile, you can upgrade the stereo system to the more powerful, 14-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.

Safety

The 2022 BMW 2 Series possesses safety features like driver-assistance technology, blind-spot monitoring, and front and rear parking sensors. You can also choose the self-parking assist that makes parking in perpendicular or parallel spots easier. The safety features in the 2022 BMW 2 Series include:

● Six airbags

● 4-wheel ABS disc brakes

● Brake assist

● Child safety locks

● Electronic stability control

● Integrated turn signal mirrors

● Daytime running lights

● Traction control

● Lane-keeping assist

● Lane departure warning

● Cross-traffic alert

● Auto-levelling headlights

Visit the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) websites to learn more about the 2022 BMW 2 Series’ crash test results.

Warranty

BMW offers competitive maintenance coverage for the 2022 BMW 2 Series models. Considered one of the best warranty providers in the industry, BMW also gives you the option to choose between the powertrain and limited warranties.

The limited warranty covers defects in craftsmanship or materials for 50,000 miles or four years, regardless of changes in ownership. The powertrain warranty covers problems with the engine, transfer case, transmission and transaxle, and drivetrain for four years or 50,000 miles.

BMW also provides a Rust and Corrosion warranty for 12 years, regardless of mileage.
