2022 BMW M3 and M4 xDrive Review (Australia)

2022 bmw m3 x Drive

The 2022 BMW M3 and M4 xDrive are performance models with all-wheel drive. While the BMW M3 is a four-door sedan and the BMW M4 is a two-door coupe, the two have identical engines, comparable performance, and very similar specs.

This inclusion of a 4WD mode is a historical modification in the history of BMW M3 and M4. So what can you expect when you hit the Australian roads in the 2022 BMW M3 and M4 xDrive?

M3 and M4: The Basics

Both the M3 and M4 lines feature:

· Sporty carbon seats for outstanding support

· Head-up display for important driving data

· Standard M Compound brakes with red, black, or blue callipers

· Distinctive BMW look with a prominent vertical kidney grille

· Aerodynamic design, soft top, and carbon fibre roof for lower gravity centre

· Full set of driver’s assist features and safety tech

Like other BMW lines, the M3 and M4 lines come with optional upgrades such as M Carbon Ceramic brakes, carbon fibre trim, a sunroof, and ventilated seats. Both M3 and M4 body styles are available in a stunning array of colours, from pure Alpine White to striking Isle of Man Green Metallic.

Both M3 and M4 will consume just under 10 L of fuel per 100 km, which is fairly fuel-efficient for cars in this range.

All-Wheel Performance in 2022 BMW M3 and M4 xDrive

The BMW M3 and BMW M4 Competition xDrive have identical powertrain and drivetrain. Both variations of the Competition line have a 3.0 L turbocharged six-cylinder engine that packs 503 horsepower with eight-speed automatic transmission.

Standard M3 and M4 engines accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h within 3.9 seconds. With xDrive in action, this acceleration time drops to 3.5 seconds.

The xDrive’s all-wheel drive comes into play when road conditions push the M3 or M4 hard enough. The XDrive has two all-wheel settings, 4WD and 4WD Sport, for perfectly adjusted system performance. The driver can also choose to switch to the familiar rear-wheel mode.

The xDrive shows its prowess when conditions call for driving quickly on road surfaces with imperfect grip. For example, on sandy, snowy, or icy roads, the all-wheel drive setting ensures optimal traction even at high speeds. In 2WD mode, the same car models will drift sideways more easily and require more steering corrections.

The M3 and M4 xDrive deliver a smooth, comfortable ride, responsive steering, and precise transmission, even at sharp turns and angles. However, BMW purists may miss the traditional 6-speed manual transmission.

The xDrive system does come with a slight weight penalty of 50 kg. However, better vehicle control at higher speeds more than makes up for the extra weight.

Interior Design and Tech Features

The new BMW M3 and M4 boast a stylish cabin with a sleek, elegant interior in several colour options. Upholstery and trim have a base of supple extended Merino leather. The front seats not only look great but provide superb performance, excellent grip, and high levels of comfort.

The car’s interior has clever systems with quality high-power window and mirror control settings, dual-zone climate control, audio tone and lighting settings, driver’s seat memory system, and more.

The steering wheel has an exceptionally comfortable ergonomic grip in both the M3 and M4 lines, with a full set of controls that allow the driver to run the show with the slightest movements.

As befits the latest BMW offering, the M3 and M4 xDrive models come fully digitalised with a 12.3-inch instrument cluster, a 10.25-inch central display, and a voice-operable multi-input iDrive system. Two USB ports, Bluetooth, a 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, and temperature displays complete the cabin’s high-tech feel, while adjustable ambient lighting enhances the driving experience.

The M4 coupe can seat four adults, while the M3 Competition sedan seats five with slightly more legroom for passengers in the rear. The M3 has a boot capacity of 480 litres, 40 litres more than the M4 coupe.

Driver’s Assist Features in M3 and M4

The M3 sedan and M4 coupe both feature BMW’s Live Cockpit Professional for easy monitoring of navigation, speed, and other crucial driving info. The operating system is fully compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Even better, the clever My BMW app lets drivers unlock, fire up, or check their vehicle status with compatible mobile devices.

Both the M3 and M4 feature the standard BMW safety system, including Active Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assistant, and Dynamic Cruise Control.

Safety Tech

The M3 and M4 come with multiple advanced features that ensure the driver’s and passengers’ safety under any circumstances. The vehicle’s Active Protection System can detect imminent accidents and prepare for them by a series of functions like automatic safety belt pre-tensioning, post-crash braking activation, and closing the moonroof and windows.

Safety and security elements in this latest BMW line include:

· Technologically advanced airbag system with clever sensors

· Rollover protection system

· Automatic pre-tensioners on front safety belts

· Automatic lock retractors on all passenger safety belts

· Active knee protection

· Adaptive brake lights

· Fatigue Alert

2022 BMW M3 and M4 xDrive: Final Word

So what is the verdict? Should you pick the BMW M3 or M4 xDrive over analogous rear-wheel models? The answer would depend on many factors, including the weather in your area, your local road conditions, and your personal preferences.

If you are a fan of sporty, stylish BMWs but also want a 4WD option for a fun and safe drive in challenging road conditions, definitely consider the M3 sedan and M4 coupe Competition xDrive.
